    What is woodworm?

Woodworm is the term used for wood-boring insect larvae that feed on timber, creating tunnels within the wood. The resulting damage can weaken timber over time, particularly where an infestation is extensive or untreated.

    • Common furniture beetle exit holes in softwood

      Common furniture beetle

      Anobium punctatum

The common furniture beetle is one of the most common wood-boring insects found in UK properties. Its larvae burrow into timber, creating tunnels that can weaken the wood over time. Signs of an active infestation can include small round exit holes, fresh bore dust (frass) and weakened timber.

    • Powder post beetle exit holes in a timber board

      Powder post beetle

      Lyctus brunneus

The powder post beetle is a wood-boring insect that mainly attacks hardwood timber, particularly newer or recently worked wood. Its larvae tunnel through the timber, producing a fine, powder-like bore dust (frass) and small round exit holes. Severe infestations can weaken timber and cause significant damage if left untreated.

    • Death watch beetle exit holes in an old beam

      Death watch beetle

      Xestobium rufovillosum

The death watch beetle attacks hardwood timbers with some decay, most commonly oak, and will also attack softwoods in contact with them. Embedded timbers are particularly at risk. It leaves exit holes of around 3mm and extensive tunnelling, and the damage can be significant. Large timbers may need periodic re-treatment, and some replacement is often required.

    • House longhorn beetle tunnelling in timber

      House longhorn beetle

      Hylotrupes bajulus

The house longhorn beetle is a serious wood-boring insect that primarily attacks softwood roof timbers and structural timber. Its larvae can remain inside the wood for several years, creating extensive tunnels that can significantly weaken structural timber.

Signs can include large oval exit holes, bore dust, surface damage and weakened or hollow-sounding timber. Early identification and treatment are important to prevent further structural damage.

We investigate the problem, identify the cause of the infestation and assess the extent of any timber damage.

    3. 3

      Report & quotation

We provide our findings in a clear, easy-to-read report, identifying the cause of the infestation and the appropriate treatment, and outlining the required remedial works, together with a fully itemised quotation.

    4. 4

      Repair and remedial works

Where woodworm treatment is required, we use low-odour, water-based timber preservatives to help minimise disruption. Following a site inspection and risk assessment, we select the most appropriate treatment and apply it to affected timber, joists, bearers and other accessible areas to eradicate the infestation and protect the timber from further attack.

All treatments are carried out by our experienced in-house team.

    Cost of woodworm treatment

Woodworm treatments typically start from around £400 + VAT. The cost depends on the type and extent of the infestation, the area affected and the treatment required.

Following a site inspection, we provide a clear written report and fully itemised quotation, so you know exactly what is required before work begins.
